GARMIN | ALPHA 200i
Alpha 200i , the latest generation of dog tracking systems for hunters. In addition to the functionality and quality of its predecessor, the Alpha 100, the new 200i has improved capacity for maps, a larger 3.5 ”screen that can be read in sunlight, programmable buttons, is easy to use and provides a good user experience for the user.
In addition, InReach satellite technology is integrated, enabling two-way messaging and interactive SOS notifications. This device makes it easier for hunters to focus on hunting.
“MY DOG’S JOB IS TO TRACK WILD GAME. MY JOB IS TO BRING THEM HOME SAFELY AT ALL COSTS.”
– Jerry Smith | Rincon Creek Guides & Outfitters
An essential part of the Alpha 200i development was collaborating with a second-generation cattle-rancher, sporting-guide, and dog trainer as he worked his pack of 20+ dogs in the field. This provided insights into methodologies of dog training, how dog performance and health were analyzed pre and post-hunt, and the struggles experienced when operating complex devices in harsh weather and terrain.
For navigation and Stimulation controls, we looked at different button configurations/shapes, scroll wheels and joy sticks. Placement and usability was also a huge variable to consider since the primary use-case is hunting while wearing gloves.
A main part within the UI exploration was how to include the inReach SOS button. With the hard-set parameters, we tried different mechanical approaches. We found that the placement drastically affected the usability, since it had to be one-handed operable yet integrated enough to avoid accidental activation.
