GARMIN | DASH CAM TANDEM

The DC Tandem was a new endeavor for Garmin’s line of Dash Cam products. The main goal was to continue providing industry leading video recording, with the addition of a cabin facing camera, in the smallest form factor on the market. These dual 180 degree FOV lenses would provide full coverage for the driver, both inside and out of the car.

The primary user would be targeted towards those in the professional driving industry. The cabin facing camera can verify an incident within the vehicle between the driver and passenger, or an action by the driver that is against the law or company code.

After preliminary testing with the field of view [FOV] for the rear, cabin-facing camera, it was decided to look into the feasibility and potential of incorporating adjustability for this camera.

The collective decision was to remove both the display, adjustable camera functionality, as well as switching from a battery to super-capacitors to reduce overall form factor.

A new project requirement was that the camera needed to sustain video up to 85 degrees Celsius (185 degrees Fahrenheit). This was another driving factor of the form change, due to the integration of a 17X17 mm fan to reach the thermal target.
